The river actually begins at the Fort Drum marsh area along Rt 60 just west of Vero Beach. For practical purpose, Blue Cypress lake is the beginning. There would be quite a number of smaller lakes not even shown on the maps. Some would only be accessable with an airboat as a result of the very extensive canal systems. But others are if you don't mind a few miles of good dirt roads to the ramps. Then of coarse theres the entire Kissimmee chain just a little further west. The Indian River runs right thru Vero Beach, with the Sebastian and Fort Pierce inlets about equal distance north and south. Whats needed most is a whole lifetime to explore it all, and at least 4 good boats. lol
