I had a drain spout that went into pcv pipe in the ground and was supposed to drain into the canal. Well, it wasn't doing that last part, so shu came over so we could snake the drain.


Found what looks like an old septic also!

That is a good question how that could happen?! Glad you all got it figured out.

There must be a corrosive getting in there. Chlorine is a more common one. This is terrible for the canal and lake. We see this in HazMat responses some, could be fertilizers or any acidic material.

Max operating temperature of PVC is 140 and begins to melt around 250. Melting point is at 350. It took a chemical reaction to create that much heat. I would be wanting to know what it was.

Only rain water went through that pipe. Straight from the roof top to the pipe and then to the canal, no stops. Although it was all stopped up with leaves, orange tree leaves to be specific.

That's it oranges are very acidic and can be very corrosive. If it backed up and then they started decomposing, then that's when they started releasing the acids. Especially, if they have been sprayed with pesticides, insecticides, or had any kind of fertilizer added. Wow that is pretty cool. Glad it did not cause too much damage.

No corrosion seen on the inside of the pipe. Although the acidity of orange leaves may have made it soft I guess. But the real cause in my opinion is the bend in the pipe. It's only schedule 20 PVC and if you look at the picture you can see it ain't straight. The pipe was collapsed from the side and not from the top down. The picture above does not represent the way it was sitting in the hole.

schedule 20 is not worth using on anything.....always get schedule 40
