I included some text so people that don't like clicking blindly can know what it's about. And yes, it says "plying".

Whether or not it was a record crappie is only part of the story for me. That fact is, this guy caught a huge crappie, he measured it and released it. He is clearly a better man than myself. Love the story...

It would have been a tremendous feeling for me to have kept her for all to see and
admire for years to come. I'm still looking for that 3 pounder in Florida waters........
Would also like to see the video of her..............
Hard to believe that a crappie fisherman (plying his trade) didn't have some type of
    scale avail!

would not have been hard to believe for me.have caught 8 or 9 that were over 17 inches, most were full of eggs, weigh only one ,it weigh 3 lb and 1 ounce, but my friend with me had a 3 lb 3 ounce and we had to weigh them for his work compretition, but wife told me last week I had to get scales, what are some good scales for crappie,do not want heavy scales for big type fish

can buy some "postal scles" that will weight very accurate down to the hundred...

    example: 15 lbs 4.04 oz.......
These guys are fairly reasonable...............check various office supply places.
and/or on line for style scale you wish.

Answer to you question of length: have two mounted on wall
one was 17 1/2 inches other was 17 1/4 inches.

    Thanks Toby,

Still hunting that 3 lb poiund black from state of Florida.....................
Took a 2 lb 7.5 from crescent during Classic that was only 15 1/4 inches.............
Length does not always make the weight........noticed the bellies of Crescent fish
very large like golf balls, but nothing except rolls of fat in those locations............
They eat well on various fresh & saltwater food in Crescent.
