Double Jig Question(s)

Ok the old man and I have just started to use double jigs instead of single jig and split shot. We have caught fish on them but we aren't definite on the do's and don't of this method.

1) When using double jigs do ya'll put the same color jig head and grub on the same line or do ya'll alternate?

2) How far apart do ya'll space the jigs from each other?

I space an arms length apart usually. I try to keep the same colors on the same rod as it is easier to keep up with what's catching fish and why! I only deviate from this when I am searching for a slow pattern. Be sure and use a loop knot with a 2 to 3 inch leader. I like the heavier jig first, but primarily can fish from 4-12 foot down fine with double 1/16ths. A 1/8 and 1/32 will go down to 15 foot. After that at Talquin you need to be tightlining.

My jigs are usually spaced out far enough to where I can hook the top jig on my bottom eyelet and my bottom jig in the foam handle. The longer the rod, the longer the spacing. And dont worry if you do it too long and your past your handle, you can always wrap the line around the rod to tighten it up. I also use a bigger loop knoton the top than crappielimits suggested. My top jig is tied with an 8-10" loop knot and the bottom is tied with as small a loop knot as I can muster. When I tie the loop knots, the top jig gets a double loop and the bottom is just one single loop. Some do it three or four times but its not needed, once through will hold a fish just as good as 3 or 4 times through will.

I agree with SYG, but on top loop knot i will tie several overhand knots from hook
to main line, this make the loop much more stiffer and keeps it away from main line,
also help elimate possible tangles of two hooks when fish are on.
I will use same basic collors on two jig set up in order as SYG says to get a feel at what
part of water column they are hitting on. Surprising you are working with 1/8 oz jigs,
wow...HEAVY, HEAVY
Spec's strike in upward motion, their eyes are lookin up......Heavy jigs are for deep
water.....18 - 25 ft down............and than would probably be tight-lining - spider
style
Think at times, Outside the box............32nd - 48th's - 64th's - 80's. You would be
amazed on size hook you get catch a monster spec with.......
You can adopt all kinkds of grubs & curley tails & plastic jigs to hook size with pair
sears, knife - razor blade...
One thing in mind: 2 - 16th oz jigs on 6# mono line, 60 ft behind boat at 1 mph will
running at 8 - 10' deep. There is additional formula's that you can work out with
various line weight or mono vs floracarbon big difference in drop....

Tangles is why I go with a shorter loop knot. And 813 I keep jigs of several sizes for different patterns. I have 1/48, 1/32, 1/24, 1/16, 3/32, 1/8 and some 1/4 on hand if needed in deeper lakes. All to get different depths at different speeds.
