Thread: An Example of a real Goober

Meet my brother-in-law I call "pontoon pappy". He prefers to be called "Catchinmaster", but I never do just to aggravate him. He and I have fished many of hours together over the years. You won't see him on CdC because he doesn't believe in computers or any modern technology.

Here he is in his jon boat and yes that's a concrete block in the front for ballast because he has an assortment of batteries in the back for the trolling motor. He ALWAYS wears his PFD for good reason because has on numerous occasions fallen out of his jon boat. Normally he fishes from his pontoon boat which has is a remarkable craft also. He's removed seats for more fishing space seeing as how fishing from this state of the art craft is an adventure of it's own.

He refers to his pontoon boat as the "ole pontooner". Let's just say she's seen better years. His docking rope consists of several docking ropes tied together after each time it breaks. On one occasion while launching the rope broke and the "ole pontooner" was drifting away from the dock, so Don with his PFD on, started swimming out to get her and as he got within grabbing distance felt something touch his foot. That's when he discovered he was swimming in about 3' of water. After discovering that he led her back to shore.

He doesn't use a trolling motor so he trolls in reverse with the outboard at approximately at 2 to 3 mph. He has an assortment of rods and reels off the front longlining if you can call it that. He has mismatched, line, jig heads and weights and he casts out as far as he can in most cases assuming he's in deep water. With each cast he shouts "go get em' killer". I say assuming because he has no depth finder other than a small rope with a weight on the bottom and a knot tied every three feet he drops down to get an idea of the depth. He usually does this while he's underway so he always thinks he's in deeper water than he actually is.

In addition, to the combos hanging off the front, he has mismatched cane poles along each side in rusted rod holders secured with rope or string and the tips running in the water. He refers to these as his cane mutinys.

Even with all this he seems to catch his share of fish and whenever anyone is within veiwing distance he always throws up both arm as to indicate he's caught the "big one". He's what he is..... and that's a classic goober.

Sounds like quite the character.

When I first met him, I didn't know what to think of him. Now that I know him better, he is a good ole goober fer sure.

Love the story about Pontoon Pappy and it was fun to meet him yesterday.
