Thread: Grass shrimp

Anybody know a good source where to buy grass shrimp? I want to do some bream fishing. I'm looking for some place around Lochloosa or Orange Lake or Rodman.

I called around and I know that Hawthorne Bait & Tackle doesn't carry them and neither does Lochloosa Harbor.

I heard that some one is selling them out of their house somewhere in Grove Park between Hawthorne and Gainesville but I can't get any information like phone number or directions.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Messers bait n tackle in Palatka has them frozen, atleast they did the last time I was there which was about 2 weeks ago. I wouldnt use anything frozen but it may work for you.

You can get your own if there are water hyacith or water lettuce floatin in the river or lake your fishin. Pick up the plants and shake the roots over a bucket. Makes a mess in the boat but its a sure way to get bait.

^^^^ This, or get a shrimp net and rake the shallow grass and weeds around the lake or river.

X2 when I was stationed in Lauderdale back in mid 70s I took a old net and got a cheap curtain that was fine mesh. Stitched it to the net with mono for support would take it and put it under a clump of hyacinth lift it up then shake into net. Lots of shrimp and little pin minnows. Fished the canals out in the glades and caught tons of fish with them.
