    Default Phourth Phishing Phiasco

Okay, first of all, i hope everyone had a great Independance Day, and being the 4th of July, i invited my girlfriend, her 13 year old son and of course our mini Dachsund named Theyda to go fishing early this morning. They met me at a local pond/lake where i've been fishing lately, been catching some good gills, bass and catfish. The first thing i did was get them set up, had the old reliable "tub o' worms" , i gave the boy a microspin, he baited it and i showed him how and where to cast, next i gave her a rod with an open face spinning reel, baited it and showed her how to cast it, and cast out for her, okay, their set, right, the dog is running around like a chicken with his head cutoff and enjoying all the activity. I head back over to where i had a BRAND NEW graphite Crappie Hunter 10 foot pole and a Shakespear micro cast, never even seen water before and i'm excited about how it's gonna handle. Well i take a few steps in that direction and wham!, boy has a fish, go back and show him how to get it off and put it on a stringer, he rebaits and casts, he's set again, start back to the crappie hunter, wham!, she's got a bite but she can't reel it in, i look over and she's got the reel upside down, with the backlash off and is cranking the thing backwards, i run over, to late she's unwound half the spool backwards and i've never seen a bigger mess, i cut the line and rehook, put the float back on and rebait and cast for her, she's set and i head back to the crappie hunter again, wham!, he's got another fish, go through that again, guess what? nobodys watching the dog, so when i do get back to the crappie pole what do i find? he's chewed the top 8 inches off the end of the brand new, never used crappie hunter pole, Doh oh well, guess it wasn't meant to be!
Anyway, after about an hour they got bored and hungry, gave'em 20 bucks and hurried them to the car and waved goodbye with a giant smile on my face. Hey, anyone remember the old song by George Throrogood "I Drink Alone", well that's me, only, I FISH ALONE, Thumbs Up later I caught my first Redear, and a couple of nice Bluegill, even a small Bass.

You broke a cardinal rule that will bite you in the arse every time.

When you take inexperienced people and that goes double for wimmens and children.... DON'T TAKE A POLE FOR YOURSELF.

You're introducing them to fishing, the teaching, fixing, and explaining will make it impossible for you to fish and only frustrate.

    I love taking kids fishing...

I have to agree with KCBrown, you can't fish when helping others which is also important (voice of experience). But you told the story excellent. Sorry about your nice rod, and glad you got rid of the company and enjoyed your self a little.

Hope I didn't come off as lecturing. Personally, I fish enough that when it is time to take others they get 100% of my attention. I get that joy again this weekend. A grandfather/granddaughter pair. He has not fished in decades, she has fished every year with me for three years and does pretty well. I won't have a rod in the boat.

I took my sister-inlaw and her boy friend BG fishing, When setting them up I handed my sister-in law a worm, (big Mistake and a waste of worms) she said YUK and threw it in the lake.
Got another worm and handed it to her said bait the hook, if you don't learn now you never will, went to help Joe and when I looked back at Sis, she had not put it on her hook! I ask why not (second dumb mistake) she said "Which end do I start on?"
Sorry but I could not resist, I told her to stick the hook in it's mouth, she ask which end is the mouth, I told her to tickel it and when it laughed to jab the hook in it's mouth.
    Made the whole trip worthwhile.
