Sometimes the Truth is Stranger Than Fiction

Last fishing season my wife and I got our son Jude his first fishing pole, a cool Spider-man one. Well, about 15 minutes after being out on the lake in the boat the pole headed to Davy Jones Locker, because Jude threw it into the water. Or at least...I thought he had dropped it into the water. Needless to say, his pole was donesies. There's no getting a Spiderman kiddy pole off the bottom of a lake that's 12 feet deep.

    Or is there?

Here's a few pics from the other day when Jude got the pole.

Well, about a week later we were back in town for some kind of birthday bash. That afternoon, my Father-in-Law Ronnie, came back inside with this Spider-Man fishing pole.

Get this...it's insane. I actually had to make Ronnie repeat it five or six times before I actually believed him.

He decided to take Jude out on the lake that afternoon because Jude just HAS to go out on the water anytime he's in Sherwood. So PaPaw Ronnie and Jude head out on the lake just to take a stroll. They weren't fishing or anything, just taking a leisurely boat ride. They were cruising down the cove here when Ronnie watched this old codger land a nice big bass. It was about 5-6 pounds of fish.

Well, a few minutes later this guys yells, "Hey, I need a stinking witness for this! I can't believe it."

Ronnie thinks the guy needs help or wants someone to see the big fish or something...so he motors over to the guy's boat.

This guys largemouth bass had a red rubber practice bobber in its mouth when he lipped it in the boat. Coming off the floatless, hookless, practice kid bobber, was some fishing line...

After pulling in about 20 feet of fishing line...a Spider-Man fishing pole came up out of the water.

Ronnie told the guy, "You ain't gonna believe this, but that's my grandson's pole that he threw in the water right here last week." All the while, Jude is sitting in the boat saying, "My fishing pole. My fishing pole." So the guy believed him and gave Jude his Spider-Man fishing pole back.

Now I'm left to wonder if Jude threw the pole in the water or the first fish he ever caught was a 5-6 pound bass? I guess we'll never know...

So...what are the odds...that an old coot hooks a five pound bass...which has a dummy lure in its mouth...still attached to the fishing line...attached to a Spider-Man fishing pole that's been in the lake for almost a week...and the kid who lost the pole is nearby in a boat with his Grandpa...on a Thursday afternoon?

    Incredible!

Sometimes I guess the truth is stranger than fiction.
