SIde Imaging Transducer Question

My fishing buddy is about to pull the trigger on a new Humminbird side imaging unit.

But he has a (good) question that maybe some of you owners here might be able to answer.

If he mounts the transducer on the transom, how do you keep the motor from blocking the beam to one side?

The transducer can't 'shoot through' the motor foot, so how do you avoid this?

May have to trim the motor up a little when side scanning.

I am having a 6 inch jack plate installed. I tend to roam all over the lake with the trim up at slow speeds. When I fire up and take off, the trim is still up.
Takes a little more time to get on plane.:o

Good Question! I was wondering the same thing myself. I have an aluminum Tracker boat with a 35 Merc. with tilt and trim. No jackplate or nothing and my motor doesn't really trim out very far on plane. Will I still be able to use the SI transducer?

Something I hadn't thought of. I will intereted to hear the responses. I hope it's not necessarry to add a jack plate. I'd hate to throw any more money at this then I already am.

I have a 4" jackplate on mine, but if you trim your motor out at all, you shouldn't have any problems.

I have a 997 SI unit on my boat and its mounted on the bottom part of the jackplate...its out of the way because of where its mounted on the plate but for those that dont have the jackplate you really dont need to spend the cash on one just to be able to use the SI.....the SI only works at up to about 4mph...mine works best right at an idle in gear...so if you jsut trim the motor up some its not going to effect the SI and you will still be able to manuver the boat around and keep it fairly slow speeds where the SI will work the best

My motor does not get in the way at normal trim and it is bolted directly to the transom.

There is another option , you buy another transducer for the left side , attach it to a y cable , that eliminates the motor totally , you will be reading right from the right side and left from the left side . Sometimes you can find the extra transducer on e-bay at a descent price.
