It can if its bent enough. Sometimes they can be straightened. If it breaks you could use one of these (they work great) http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...uard&noImage=0
Or if its really bad a prop shop can put a new one on for you.

Will a bent skeg cause your boat to run like it is heavier on one side?

If you've decided to take it to a shop or put on a Skeguard you can try saving yourself some bucks by sandwiching the sked between a couple of boards, apply a LARGE C-clamp and tighten... Leave on for awhile. It COULD crack the skeg, but, more likely, will straighten it some. If it cracks... take it to the shop or put on the Skeguard like you were going to do anyway![]()
there is a replacement skeg cover that just slips over your old skeg. it is super durable. the man that was showing it to me let me beat on it as much as i wanted with a aluminum baseball bat. i could not break it. i think they were about $75.00 each. i will see if i can find his card and post the info tomorrow.
I know this is an old thread, but I am in need of buying a skeggard myself. I hit a wingdam last year and sheared off an inch or two off the skeg. I`m wanting to sell the boat this year because I cannot afford it at this time. A marina quoted me $300 to weld on a new skeg, and repair the prop. I was wanting to do it a little cheaper because I am selling it.
Has anyone installed one of the "skeggards"? looks like it bolts on to the exsisting skeg with a couple of screws. Will I need to drill out holes in the skeg to install this?
I've installed them and its very easy to do. Slip it on, drill 2 holes, and put the bolts and nuts on. Presto, you have a new skeg and they work great.
