    Default Another 787c21 Failure

Well...I've been so busy this summer with my Master's degree that I haven't had the oppurunity to get on the water much. Yesterday, I went for the first time in 6wks.! Far cry from last year but that's another story. I was excited about taking a guy from school out to try and catch some fish. Seeing as I only having a couple of weeks left before my middle school students come back to see me.

    Problem:

Got to the ramp and figured the boat would be hacked off at the irregularity of her time spent with me but after a couple of tries she came to life and all was well. Got to the first fishing spot, deployed the trolling motor and it worked as well. Everything was going well until...I reached down and turned on the 787c. I expected to see that colorful screen light up and go to work, Wrong! It turned white blinked and turned white again...that's it. Tried on numerous occasions to get it to power up but to no avail. Now I'm standing on the front of my boat looking like an idiot gazing at a $600 black box that does nothing. Fished blind all day and caught a total of ZERO fish. Now, in all fairness I should have been able to catch at leat one fish w/o that box but it sure would have helped if I could have moved out to the deeper water and fished the channel.

The other problem with this thing is that the GPS is sad. It updates so slow that I get lost when I know where I am. GPS says I'm going one way and I'm going another. Anybody ever had that happen. LOL! It's not real funny though when you are on the water and you want to fish a particular area and the unit can keep up with your position.

My GARMIN 178c on the console is way better in the GPS dept. I plot a course to a waypoint and I end up on top of it every time. I can throw a marker and catch fish. That's all I want but I can't figure this HB out. I like most of the features and the resolution(for as much as I've been able to use it) but the GPS is frustrating and now it has other issues.

I had been waiting to give a review of the product on here, before yesterday, because I wanted to use the unit and really see what it could do before I did. I always like giving people thier props when they design good products but unfortunately I didn't get that far into the process with this unit.

Hopefully the unit will come back running like a champ but I am concerned by the mere volume of problems from HB owners just on this site.

Everyone that owns one of these units knows the "other" problems. PC connection issues. Lack of power cables to be exact. Update problems and the list goes on.

Alright, I'm getting off the soap box. Hope that everyones issues get patched up eventually. HB should be actively looking into these issues. I can't understand why they wouldn't be. I'm still waiting for a power cable design though.

    Happy Fishing,

Crappiehound, I have an extra external antenna I'll give you if you decide to go that way. It's for a 997, but I assume it would work for your unit.

Thanks for the tip Speck. If it don't work so good they shouldn't sell it that way. My Garmin is dead on and its internal. I don't like it when products don't work as advertised. Some others are having the same problem. I guess I'll have to try it know that I'm $800 deep into unit and accessories as it is. Like having an old junker car...just keep putting money in it and it'll be fine one day. LOL!

It's always been up front. The update on the GPS is silly slow but the main problem was the screen went completely white. From what I have read, HB does a good job with customer service and I'm confident I will get a unit back that works. Just not sure about how the GPS is going to respond but we'll just have to see.
