Default 24 volt trolling motor HELP

I have a evinrude 24 volt trolling motor i have a 4 wire plug that the connections go to from the batteries. here is my question currently i have a red and orange wire to plug and 2 blacks on negative if i use a meter i get 12 volts on each red and orange. How do i get 24 volts to the motor. I did use a jumper betwen the pos and neg on the battery and can get 24 volts on red wire but why did they have both sets of wires hooked up.

    i hope this makes sense.

Your wiring is for 12/24. If you jumpered at the battery, the lead that goes to the positive terminal that has the jumper on it is 12V, and the black lead on that battery is ground. The lead for the positive terminal of the battery that has the jumper connected to its negative lead is the 24V lead.

    Here's a standard 12/24 setup:

This shows a jumper at the plug between N2 and P1. You've done the jumpering at the batteries. You'll have 24V between N1 and P2. You just won't need the 12V plug at the connector.

Either pull it out and look at the back, or remove any battery jumper and see if you can still get 24 at the plug.
