Garmin echomap 73sv GPS quit working

As the thread title says, the GPS quit working a while back. Nothing in the settings that I can find. Everything else still works fine. Maps are there, but it shows I'm always right at the spot where it quit working. Emailed tech support and they suggested updating the software. Tried that, but i obviously don't know enough about the different file types or something. Actually, Who am I kidding, I'm fairly computer illiterate all the way around. So, I'm thinking I must have gone sideways somewhere in trying to load the updates to a sd card, because my unit displayed a message saying there was no files to load. I tried following instructions from their email. I'm not sure where I went wrong.

Do any of you fellows know of someone in Northeast Alabama or the general area that works on Chartplotters, GPS, etc.?

My home burned last summer and I'm still recovering financially so I just can't go buy another one, but I certainly wouldn't mind paying someone for their time and parts if it's not likely to be as much as a new one anyway. Any knowledge or contact info appreciated.

What's the last update on the unit? Should be 29.10

I don't remember the # but I can check tonight. It's not current though. That's what I was trying to do is update it per tech supports instruction. I'm having trouble with that so I really don't know if it needs actual repair or not.

Can you reset to factory setting on your unit after backing up waypoints etc?

Tried that. It didn't help. I really don't know what to try next. I'd replace it but I just can't justify that cost at this time. I've been fishing without it but a couple weeks ago I found myself several miles from the ramp on a moonless evening. I sure would have loved to have it working on the way in that night. I had to putt putt the whole way back.

Reckon it's outdated so badly that it is not compatible to update with more recent versions of the software?

I would download the latest software update to a SD card and install it. Can't hurt and may fix your problem.

That's what I was trying to do. For some reason after loading to a card my unit said there was no files to load on the card. I'm not sure what went wrong. That's when I came here seeking advice or someone that can work on them.
