All the modes have their uses, if you understand them. As a fisherman who sometimes explores new lakes, I like heading up when running at speed. I also like it when trolling depth contours. Sitting still - I don't care, so, I usually leave it there.
for me it's heading up, I like everything going the same way. North up and boy am I confused, the boat goes 1 way when I'm going the other.
Back before the AS GPS HS antenna came out I taught students to use North Up at slow speed and then put N, E, S, W stickers on the edges of the screen and use a ball compass ...
Simply note which sticker is needed to direct the HB donut to (toward the next waypoint) and then use the ball compass to go that direction ...

I still use this method myself (without the stickers on my screen tho) ...

I much prefer North up for my style of fishing, which is sitting on the edge of a waypoint-marked piece of structure.
If the boat drifts off while fighting a fish or whatever, I find it easier to get my bearings without the map spinning around and trying to find a heading while moving at slow speed.
Heading up, I don't have any problems driving to WTPs or staying orientated by them, I'm left,right,ahead or behind them, I always though it to be rather easy...
"Heading Up" for me too. I guess the "North Up" feature doesn't mean a whole lot to me... since I know (instinctively) where North, South, East and West are on my home waters without any help from my electronics.
My opinion may change (likely would change) in the event that I fished new or unknown waters... which I hope to do on occasions, at least according to my bucket list.

I had to learn not to concentrate on " north " but the way point relationship to the boat . I lose signal with it on North up also . Should I get an external puck ? It only is a problem when there are several way points close to each other . I finally remember to zoo in when they are say 10 -20 ft . apart .
