Default Another Newbie Question on HumminBird

    Hello All,

I am about to make the largest fishfinder/GPS purchase I have made to date and need some help decidingwhich to get.

After reading as much as I can standhere on Crappie.com, as well as other sites, I have decided on aHumminbird product. Specifically a Helix 9 or 10. I was lookinghard at the 9, but after shopping price and the HD transducer I want,I see I am within striking range of the 10.

After reviewing the specs on both unitsit appears to me that the only difference in the two are the 10 comeswith the HD transducer and the 9 requires me to upgrade. Wellobviously I also get more viewable real estate with the 10.

My question is, are there somedifferences between the 2 that I am missing that will help me decideone way or the other?

Last question. After researching thetransducer upgrade, I want to say it says something to the affectthat I have to purchase the upgrade transducer direct, which is fine. Do I have to purchase the fish finder direct as well? Or can I shopbest pricing online?

Thank you all for you help.

I have two Helix 10 SI units on my boat, one at the bow and one at the Dash. I had both installed before I took delivery of the boat. Since then, I have changed the network setup between the two units and set myself up for installation of a 360 unit in the future. I have also mounted an HD transducer on my trolling motor. To make sure I was getting the right parts and didn't miss anything two folks on the forum were quite helpful to me and they typically respond quickly to PM's sent to them with your questions. The first is Rickie, rnvinc is his handle on the site and he is very knowledgeable regarding the HB products and their installation and use. The second is Brian, BBG Marine, I got him to price various components I was looking at and he beat everyone else's prices hands down. I explained to Brian what I was trying to do, and he second checked what I wanted and made sure I had considered the options and had all the parts I would need. My recommendation would be to give these two gentlemen a PM and ask them your questions. Just my two cents based on my experience with HB electronics.

The other difference between the 9 and 10 is that the screen on the 10 is 1" bigger.....bigger is always better with a SI unit.
Did you figure the exchange price of the transducer or the full price of buying a new HDSI?

The physical size of the units are the same, but not the screen.

    Helix 9. $999.00
    TD upgrade $85.00
Shipping for TD both ways. ????

    Helix 10. $1499.00

Looking for any hidden advantages to the 10 to justify the $350+ price difference.

I think you can probably get the 10 over $100 cheaper than that if you give Brian a call at BBG Marine.....and get the 9 cheaper also.

If your budget allows for the 10 .....that is the way to go.

The extra 1" doesn't sounds like much, but makes a lot of difference .... The 10 also has a higher pixel density and will make the screen more crisp.

Thank you all for your honest advice on the subject.

I took the plunge and placed an order for the Helix 10 on the BBG Marine Web site. I am sure I could have saved a few bucks on it from some random website but feel really good about spending my money with a company that comes so highly recommended by you all.

As you can image I am excited and can't wait to see that box waiting for me out at the front gate. I am sure I will have some questions once I have it installed.

Until then, thank you all again.

Rob, go ahead and call Brian at BBG Marine to make sure he applies the crappie.com discount and you get the best price before he ships it to you.
