Motorguide X5
I may have killed my MG Tour TM so I may be in the market for a new TM. I want a cable steer and I prefer something around 55# thrust. I was looking around online and saw the MG X5 as maybe a comparable option.
Does anyone have one of these and how do you like it? Any cons?
One thing about the MG Tour that drove me nuts was it seemed that only about 50% of the speed dial seemed to even do anything. I used to think why have a variable speed motor with a wide range if 1/2 of that range was useless. It would have been nice if all of the dial would have had power I could have really tweaked the speed that I wanted.
I did see MK has a 55# 12v Maxum. How are the speed controls on these? Are the foot controls smooth?
I don't want this to be a MK vs MG thread so please let's not go there, I've owned both and neither is without flaws.

If the plastic, speed dial on the motor guide tour, had been cracked, were it fits over the variable speed saft. It may have moved. This could explain why you didn't have the full speed adjustment. (new plastic speed dial, might fix that)

I wish it was that simple of a fix, I had a steering cable brake. I was stuck in a mud flat chasing some real shallow fish. I had to use the outboard and got off the flat and off the lake. I took the TM into the shop and got a call today the unit had a really strange noise in the motor. They ran some tests and had to get in touch with MG but the motor may be toast or at least it may cost more to fix than what I'm willing to put into an 8 year old TM. I won't really have an answer until Wednesday when they can talk to the right guy at MG to see if they can diagnose the problem.
About that speed switch....I don't think it was bad, I think it's just the way it is. A friend of mine had a 24v Tour and his was pretty much the same.
A way to describe the switch was if it was a clock and the switched moved from 7:00 to 5:00 (clockwise). When spun the dial on the speed control, the prop didn't move until 10:00 and it didn't get any faster after 3:00. All the other mothing was useless.
I'm just trying to get some idea on then new TM's out there. I'm sure MG had to improve that dial or at least I hope the did. I hope I get some feed back on some of the new stuff out there. the only thing I know is I know I don't want a power drive and would like to stay with a 12v.
