    Default 788ci HD DI Combo

Pulled the trigger on this Humminbird unit today to replace my old Garmin GPSMAP unit I had on the console.

Obviously this will be a huge upgrade.

Any tips or tricks to pass along from those with experience with this unit?

I have the 788 on the bow with the transducer mounted on my trolling motor. You will love the DI when looking at structure. Humminbird had issues with erratic depth changes when used with the trolling motor. I experienced it also when the trolling motor is running. I downloaded the latest update for the unit, which is suppose to fix this. I haven't had the boat out this spring so hopefully it works.

Less than two years later I am having issues.

Was out on the Ohio in november hunting and it was pretty cold. Ran some chop and I guess it vibrated the head unit just enough to lose power. Had issues since then with it wanting to come on momentarily and get to the legal disclaimer/accept screen and then go all white. Only way to turn the head unit off is to pull it off the quick connect thing.

I tried it yesterday in the barn on the boat since it had warmed up and now I only get the all white screen. Humminbird wants 200+ to repair it since it is out of warranty.

I disconnected the metal plate that holds the power and transducer cables and tried to snug them up higher and tightened back down my screens. That didn't help either.

Anybody run into this issue with this model or this issue with another model? What was the fix if you did?

I would start by checking the power supply for the unit. Ensure that you are getting 12 volts at the power cable. Check all connections for any that are loose or corroded. It would be best of you could temporarily connect the power cable to a known good battery or test it on someone else’s boat that has a Humminbird unit (connect only the power cable). If that still does not help than you may have to return it for servicing.

You might try taking the cables out of the quick connect and plugging them directly into the unit to see if it still may be a connection issue...

Thanks Greg. I will get the meter out tonight and test it.

Also, plugging the cables directly into the unit sounds like a good way to check it after I ensure I am getting 12v to it.

Thought it was kind of odd that it was working perfect before that one morning in the dark when I momentarily lost the screen. It would come back on and work but would "flatline" the screen before it picked up satellites. Now I get nothing but a white screen.

I changed out the cable but still had the same issue
The wire was skinned but that was not the fix. After I put the ferrite ring on it only gets goofy in shallow water with the trolling motor on
