Default Humminbird 899 help reading my snapshots

I bought a new to me Humminbird 899 ci si earlier this summer. It seems most of the times I have taken it fishing I have been more engrossed in fishing and less interested pushing buttons and learning this unit. So today, I was a bit more relaxed while taking the kids fishing and decided to make a recording so I could play with humview on my computer. I had found a bunch of fish last Wednesday and we did real well. They were bluegills. Today I went out to the same place and didn't really do that well fishing. So when we were wrapped up I did a little bit of driving around with the record feature on and I think I found the same schools of fish we were on last Wednesday, they had just moved to deeper water. I just wanted to make sure that what I was seeing was larger schools of fish and not something else.

I was surprised that the detail when loaded up on my computer wasn't better. It felt to me that the detail I saw on the finder was more crisp. I am open to any suggestions as to playing with the settings. I haven't really changed any of the settings on the unit itself on the boat other then factory defaults b/c I always felt the read outs were really good. Now I downloaded it onto my computer and they don't look as crisp. Anyhow, open to suggestions. For once I was really excited what I was seeing on the screen. I'm starting to get used to using this unit and can really start to see the benefits of it. I have been one of those guys that has traditionally used a fish finder for depth and that's about it.

I have seen times that HV was crisper ...and other times the unit snapshot was crisper ...

You can right click on any of the panes in HV and it will open tools for you to manipulate the image (pallette, contrast, brightness) ...

It really helps to have the unit (on a AC/DC converter) and HV running at the same time to compare when reviewing recordings ...

Absolutely fish! While the images are good. You can make them great by playing with the settings. You can always hit the factory default button and get back to where u are now if ya get things screwed up. After you get these things down pat, you will find that you will prefer to drive around and look at fish and play with settings instead of wanting to catch them hahaha.

Thanks guys. I'm anxious to get back on the water and play around with the settings again.

I have found it very beneficial to stop fishing about 30 minutes early from go home time and record from the present boat position all the way back to the boat ramp ...

Then study those recordings at home when I'm not bothered by that nagging bug in my head that's screaming "themz fish down there - grab da poles!!!!"

Thats what i did the other day was record on the way back to the ramp. Fortunately i had a meeting to be at or else i would have been very tempted to get the poles back out. Fishing poles is just one of those things i have a hard time putting down. I feel like a quitter every time i put the rod away. Funny how that does not translate into my shopping abilities.

Is there a better viewing software on the computer to be using?
