Not much difference in these 2 ... Except the Helix is a wide format screen ... Which would allow more sonar history visable ...

Compare the menu system between the 2 at a big box store ...

Buy the one that seems easier to navigate thru the menus ...

I would look at the Helix 5 DI GPS instead of the Helix 5 DI ...

I fish small local waters so I don't think I need GPS ,thanks for your input.I am leaning towards the helix 5di,because I will place it on aluminum bass boat.

Even on a small body of water the gps will allow you to mark submerged cover and return to it anytime you like rather than have to hunt for it each time your back on the water.

Each fisherman has to make choices based on our boats and where we fish, how we fish, and our bank accounts. I have gps on my humminbird 898. It comes in handy when you see something , you mark it . And many times i am surprised at the navigation as it is leading me back to that spot . Without a marker of some kind , sometimes its hard to find the structure again. You feel like its this way and its really that way. I find its worth the extra money. Be safe and enjoy yourself.

if you ever do hit a larger lake, especially one you don't know GPS is necessary to find your way back to the ramp. Make a waypoint for the ramp then you can bring it up and go straight back no problem. I've been on smoe lakes that look the same in every direction and it's hard for an old man to get his bearings so GPS

If you fish local waters which don't have sonar maps available check out the Elite 4 Chirp which has the Insight Gensis feature which allows you to create your own depth sounding maps. Might be able to find some honey holes doing that. Humminbird doesn't have this feature in that price range ($300). Downside is smaller screen...

Mark waypoint with every fish you catch. A friend told me about doing this and you will BE VERY suprised at the "trends" of where and time of year you caught them there. Lakes big or small. Go with the GPS.

I agree with GPS, what it adds to your arsenal for finding and catching fish is unmatched.
