    Default 798 2d sonar

I just upgraded the software on my 798 from version 5.840 to the new 7.120. I have noticed that my 2d sonar doesnt seem as crisp as it was with the old software. I keepy settings at 200 hz with the sensitivity up around 15 and the surface clutter at 3. I use it mainly for jiggin structure. Any thoughts and why the display doesnt seem to look as good? Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

HB changed the ping sequence somewhere around 6.5xx to render better SI ...at the detriment to the 2d ...

This has been rectified in the new 7.5xx versions with the added feature of a selectable "Jigging mode" ... Which puts the ping sequence back to 6.490 characteristics ...

I can only assume that the xx8 series SI units will also get this selectable "Jigging mode" in an upcoming release ...

If you don't need 360, AS GPS HS antenna, or iLink ... I would suggest reverting your unit to least 6.490 ...

This answers the question why on my 688CI HD (without DI) has a lot better 2d image than the 2d on my 798CI HD SI unit. I could not ever figure this out, but I think this explains the reason. Even on the 688CI HD I could see my line, and lure and bait easily and clearly, but I could never get it that clear on the 798.

Correct ... The ping sequence change was only applied to the SI units ...

I'm sure HB had good intentions as most discussion is always about how to get better SI images ...

I guess there were a lot more users also interested in the 2d quality than they had expected ...

The cool thing about this new "Jigging mode" is that it is selectable ... So a user has the option of still having the improvements in the SI from the ping sequence change ... But can select "Jigging mode" when needing the 2d for vertical jigging ...

Shame they took so long to get a fix in. They lost me as a customer last year due to the poor 2D on my 998. I jumped ship to Garmin. On another note, I also recently jumped ship from MinnKota to Motorguide due to the poor spot lock on the I-pilot. I'm sure they put most of their engineering time and money into the Ulterra, but once again dropped the ball on the i-pilot trolling motors. I think Johnson Outdoors is a great company, but sometimes wonder if the folks making the decisions, fish with there equipment.

Rickie, which software version do you think would be better for my 798 in regards to my 2d sonar,7.60 or 6.49?

I would suggest you try the newest ...

You may like the ability to select "Jigging mode" for better 2d and then un-select "Jigging mode" for better SI ...

We can always get you back to 6.490 if you want ...

I just need to get out on the water with it. Which hasn't been happening. Going to Canada in 3 weeks though.
