ONIX vs. 1199?
Anyone with experience with both of these units: Prefer one over the other? Or is this an apples to oranges comparison?

I had an 1199 on my boat that I just sold a couple weeks ago. It was a good unit - huge screen and easy to read. The vendor I dealt with recommended it over the Onix due to issues that have been observed. I had my 1199 connected to the Terrova with Link and it really let me focus on fishing....set it and forget it.
I like that the Onix has auto mapping options built in, but that's something that can be added to the 1199 with a card. For me personally, the Onix doesn't offer anything additional to me as a recreational angler that equates to putting more fish in the boat that I can't get on devices for significantly less money. Also, there is no backwards compatibility with xxx9 products, so that was also a determining factor for me.
I just got the 2015 Marine catalog from Bass Pro in the mail today and out of six pages of HB products, the Onix was not in it. Could speculate a couple reasons, but I found it interesting.
A lot of folks really get deep into the specs, hardware, and lingo but it all boils down to what works for you and what you're comfortable using. That being said, I am taking a hard look at Garmin when I get my next boat (hopefully soon!!!). Then again, there are great deals on used Lowrance Gen 2's out there now too. Who knows, I just like that there are more options out there. If you're down to those two options, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good luck

1199 is one heck of a unit. It's much easier to use. That's what puts Humminbird ahead of other manufacturers along with their great customer service. Onix is new and needs a few years to get all bugs out.

I had 1197, then 1198 and now onix. I like the onix much better.
