If all you want is a little flasher for your dash, I guess that might be as good as any other. But with so many options to choose from out there.....units that look every which way but up....GPS units that you can load up with waypoints and they will bring you back to that spot every time....combinations of all those, and most even have a "flasher" screen to look at! I think the best place for a flasher type unit would be at the bow so you can watch your jig, but that's just MHO. Some of the newer units are coming down in price....have you looked into anything like that?

If all you want is instantaneous depth reading at speed it will work just fine. I am assuming your in dash was a factory installed small flasher unit just for depth.

Thanks cray. I like all the new toys out today but old flasher system was hard to beat for many years. love side imaging but waiting for retirement to invest that much money as my fishing time is limited due to my schedule

There is also a radio you could fill the hole with.

That's what I have done since retiring. Just save and add a piece as I can. Got a 998 and still rely on my 2d as much as anything. It amazes me how we get so excited about all this new technology and think back at all the fish I caught with my old Humminbird Super 60.

That's what went bad in my boat but 23 years old is awesome versus the life of new products
