Personally I have a 998 and I don't think they are worth the difference. Lots will disagree and say bigger is always better but on those 2 units I don't think the picture is that much different.![]()

I have been looking at these two units. Is the 999 worth $500 more then the 899. I can get alot of baits with $500 but if the 999 is worth it I will get it. Really do not have a budget. Just like to spend wisely. Thanks.

Tranducer may be a difference to, well not maybe but you can pickup the bigger ducer with the ducer exchange program. I have the 899 and really like it and have been getting good pics with the stock ducer. haven't ran the cable thru my hull yet waiting to decide if I will try to pick up the bigger one.

From what I understand the 8 series comes with compact transducer. Bird has a exchange program where if you don't open the package you can exchange it for the HD transducer that comes with the 9 series.

Can't speak for the new units, but when I use the 998 transducer on my 798, the side imaging is much better than with the stock compact transducer.

Thanks everyone. I am going to pick up the 899 and exchange transducers.
If you want you can find a XHS-9-HDSI-180T online for cheaper than you would get from Humminbird. I found one for $170 from a website. That is more expensive than paying Hummingbird $90 to exchange the transducer, but you don't have to wait for the mailing process and you will have an extra transducer you can put on the TR and share the transducers with the same unit. That's how I did my 899CI.
