Default I want to buy a Lowrance HDS7 Gen2 .... what else do I need to know?

Okay, I am currently running a HDS5x off the stern of the jon boat (came with the boat).

I want to put this unit on the trolling motor, and add a HDS7 Gen2 for the stern. I want side imaging and down imaging capability, GPS mapping, and waypoint storage. Anything else I need to consider?

I have a Minnkota with iPilot on the bow if that matters?

Their is some other neat technology out there such as the Humminbird 360, iPilot Link, etc .... but I don't think I'm ready to go there just yet.

    Location, location...

I run both an HDS 7 & 8 Gen 1. I sometimes struggle with which unit to keep on the bow. Most of the time it's the 7 but sometimes I like having the larger screen up front where I spend most of my time. Size does matter ya know especially with SI.

I'm not familiar with the 5x, can the units be linked with Ethernet?

I have your exact setup. I would recommend purchasing the lake map chip for your area from Navionics. I have the the HDS5 on the bow of my boat while the HDS 7 touchscreen is mounted at my console via a sidemounted RAM mount since I have a walkthru with windshield and was unable to mount above my dash. This also works well when I'm on the bow of the boat because I can rotate the HDS7 towards the bow and quickly switch between the two units if I wanted a better look at structure after I've rolled over it with the bow mounted unit (versus having to turn around). These two units are tethered and work well together. Good luck with your new investment!

I would advise an 8 if you can swing it. Too many screens, things get small

To get DI and SI, you'll need an LSS or you'll need an HDS Touch instead if the Gen2.

5x is 2d only but it can share 2d functions. I presently have a HDS5 linked via LSS1 to the 5x. Both on front of boat. His and hers arrangement.
