JW ... there's a 76 page sticky thread at the top of this forum, that's totally dedicated to this unit.

And while the advertised price @ Cabela's is not bad, in comparison to what it originally cost (or what it's been sold for recently) ... you have to consider the fact that this model has been discontinued by Lowrance ( Lowrance Elite-5 DSI DownScan Imaging Fishfinder / Chartplotter - LOWRANCE | Marine Electronics ).

Now my next question if they are discontinuing this model should I not buy it, is there one out there similar to it and also in price. I can buy it from Cabelas tomm for 315 with 1 year warranty

They came out with one that is like the Elite 7, has down image and 2d sonar both of coarse the price is higher. I have had both the Elite 7 and now have the 5 at the console and for some reason the GPS in the 5 seems to perform better, sold my 7 after about 3 weeks. Also the 5 reads depth at 63 mph, fastest I have been so far in the new to me rig. Let me know if you want to talk about the one I have, haven't advertised it and wont until you decide. Happy Thanksgiving and good luck.

Don't forget we have sponsors here on the site that can beat Cabela's and BPS prices.

JW ... I wouldn't be so bold as to tell you how to spend your money. I'm happy with mine, which was a big upgrade in capabilities over the b/w 2d units that I've previously owned. I bought mine from a member, which included a 2nd transducer/power cable and the TM mount bracket sleeve, and paid ~$475 (a couple of years ago).

You might do well to check with some of our Sponsor Members, like BBG Marine, first ... and see what kind of deal they can offer you (& how long they're willing to wait for your decision) before committing to the Cabela's deal.
But, yes ... you would have to consider the fact of it being a discontinued model, warranty or not, and whether or not it could be serviced beyond the warranty expiration date.

You might also consider that a member (scrapiron) recently posted on my sticky thread, that he purchased the unit from Cabela's @ $379 +s/h ... and now it's being offered for $60 less. Inventory reduction sales may drive the price even lower, in the weeks to come. But, at whatever price you pay, you still have to consider that it's a discontinued model ... and that newer models will come down in price, too, eventually. Remember ... the original MSRP for the Elite 5DSI/Chartplotter was close to $700.

Answered in the sticky thread. But, basically ... yes, you would have to have a map card if you want depth contour lines on your chart map.
