Default where too put humminbird 798 and 898....

I have a 898 on the console of my boat and just purchased a 798. I wanted some opinions on what people thought would be best for crappie fishing...leave the 898 on the console and put the 798 on the trolling motor...or remove the 898 and install the 798 on the console and move the 898 to the trolling motor... What would you do? They do have different transducers...

Bigger unit at the concole, need it as big as possible when running these dang COE flood control lakes, specially this time of year during draw down.

trade both for a 1198 and move it back and forth. Just kidding, I would rather have the 898 up front as that is where you spend most of your time on the trolling motor

thanks for the opinions...going to put 798 on trolling motor to start.. because it is a pain to move the 898 transducer off the rear...will see how clear it is....

If the xducer for the 798 is still new... HB will trade a HDSI (455kHz/800kHz) for your stock Compact SI xducer (455kHz)...(there may be some boot$$ here...I'm not sure)..

Your 798 will not be able to use the 800kHz frequency of the HDSI but some say they get better images on their 798 using the HDSI xducer...(this would be because the piezo elements in the HDSI are longer which should give a sharper image)...

If you upgrade to the HDSI for your 798...then you would have the same xducer at both ends of the boat and you could experiment with which head unit you like at which end of the boat the best...

Or...(if the 798 is a "HD" model)...you can Ethernet the 2 units together and see either xducer from either head unit...

Put the larger unit where you will spend the bulk of your time fishing.

I put my big unit at the console, and 2 small units (595c and matrix 27) on the bow. 1 bow unit is hooked up to the us2 on the trolling motor and the other to a transom mounted transducer. this is awesome for fishing drop offs where you can see where the bow and stern are in relation to the drop off. Also, don't think that the older matrix units aren't any good-they are good depth/fish finders. I have compared what I see on my 1197 to what I see on the matrix unit while moving, they are very close (the 1197 obviously does sharper images with the down imaging) but while in regular depth finder mode, they are VERY close. The Matrix units are pretty cheap right now too. Just thought I'd offer another opinion.
