on my old 550 I had to adjust the keel offset to get the depth from the ducer to the bottom now with the 596 is it automatic or do I have to make adjustments? cuz I really don't see an offset.

No it is not automatic tav. They changed the name of that menu. Look for the “Depth Offset” menu under the “Setup” menu tab. You will need to have the unit in the “Advanced” setting for the “User Mode” menu to be able to see this menu. The “User Mode” menu is also under the “Setup” menu tab.

as i was fliping tru the menu i did see it. whats the easyist way to match the dept for off set purposes?

Don't know if I understand what you are asking tav. The depth displayed will be the depth from the ducer to the bottom. The offset in the menu is designed for use with map cards, if I'm not mistaken. If the lake is high or low from it's "normal pool" (which is what the map card is set to), then you can tell the map card how much offset and it will compensate for that.

I think it was designed for deep draft boats with the xducer on the the transom but most people use it for the depth the TM is in the water...

No. The transducer will always tell you the depth from it to the bottom. This adjustment is if you have a really deep boat and the transducer may be more than one foot under water, or more than one foot above the keel. If you have a fishing boat, I wouldn't adjust it all because there would only be a few inches difference. But if you want to adjust it, measure from the transducer up to the water line to know the actual depth of the water. That would be a positive number. If you want to know the actual depth from the keel to the bottom, measure from transducer to keel, and put in a negative number.
