Can you go to Cabela's or Bass Pro to look at the different models while they are in simulator mode? That plus your price range will tell you more than anything. DI and/or SI are nice, but don't get stuck on one brand or another. There are advocates here for both HB and Lowrance, but in the end you pick the one you can afford, or the one you like best.

You may be able to save money and get a unit higher if you go with the non-HD. Keep all your options open. There may be good units for sale in the personal classified ads here on the main forum. I saved some money by buying used. When I can afford to upgrade, I will sell my older unit there

Like Vic said, both good units. I chose a HB over Low simply because it seemed to be simpler to operate. Price point may dictate purchase as much as anything. Do you use GPS? Would you use the DI enough to justify it? I feel a good unit with GPS is more beneficial than DI.

I agree with cray....GPS/chartplotting is way more beneficial than DI or SI ...

The ability to mark productive spots and then return to them over and over is a feature I would not be without...

Have you checked prices on Ebay? I did when buying a HB 598 and saved some money and still have full warranty. I agree the GPS is the first upgrade I would choose!!

If I were you, I would seriously consider buying Garmin echoMap 50s: Fish Finder Reviews » A Review Of The Garmin EchoMAP 50s I've used both HB 597 and Garmin echoMap 50 and the Garmin is much better unit.
