    Default Question about Hummingbird LCR400

I was in a pawn shop yesterday and picked up this HB/LCR400. It came in a hard shell case with transducer. I bought it for $50. Ebay has one for sell around that price so I figured it was a good deal. I got it for Ice Fishing. Does anybody have any information on how good the unit operates? I downloaded the manual but is just goes over the basics. I know it is old but wondering how good it works. Any info would be appreciated . I don't imagine it has GPS so I will have to figure out a way to get one of those I don't have a smart phone. It's old but you got to start some where especially if your on a fixed budget :-)

If you have never used sonar before, looking at one of these on ice (sitting still) will take some interpretation on your part. The advertised "arches" that indicate fish will not be there (I don't know what might show up wish 'fish ID' turned on), the creation of the arch happens when the fish and/or the sonar are moving....this means that a fish, or group of fish will appear as horizontal lines above the bottom. I think one of the important things for you may be to figure out a way to get your transducer to point straight down while you are fishing. Some people make a floating styrofoam thing to set the ducer in, or maybe you can mount it to a stick hanging straight down. Try doing a search for how to read 2d sonar

    good luck

I have owned the LCR 200 and 400 and for what you are doing I think it will be fine. It is an older unit, no GPS, but it will show you what is under you. I would do a search on here for interpreting the screen images. We have a good one on our SC page. http://www.crappie.com/crappie/south...retations.html
Let us know how you do. What are you using for a battery?? The small 12 volts like for a lawnmower or similar will work just fine.

When I got it it has 2 boxes for lantern batteries so that is what is in it now. don't know how I would hook up a bigger battery. The reason I got this one is because it showed a man Ice fishing on the box.

Just curious: is that an LCR 400 or an LCR 400-ID?
Either way its at least 20 years old. I would like to hear if it is still working or not.
