Default Recommendations for Used Side/down imaging Fishfinder wanted

Gentlemen, I'm trying to find out some Brand/models of USED fishfinders to step up from Piranhas that I currently have. I am not exposed to much others fishing setups so I have no exposure to equipment for hands on testing and rely on reviews a lot.

I fish mostly a shallow lake 2-35 ft and rivers feeding it with 20-25 ft channels. Bass, crappie and the occasional catfishing trip. Aluminum V Lowes 170W and usually alone. I don't tournament fish.

Price needs to stay under a grand. I'm interested in being able to learn more of the underwater area of my "home lake" and it's feeding rivers. As it's not very large, a chartplotter or Autopilot or stuff like that isn't important.

    Currently looking at
    Lowrance HDS-5
    Hummingbird 998 SI

Are there others I should watch for or stay away from? Also If you have ballpark figures on what units are going for that would be appreciated also. Trying to keep from blowing money on outdated technology or equipment known to be a POS.

If somebody has something similar to above please PM me. Cash in hand or Paypal if wanted for COMPLETE setups.

    Thank you,

Are you looking for an Si unit with any certain display size?
I ask because the older 997 units would work well as would a 898c Si unit. You may be able to pick up a used one of either of these for under a grand.

If you plan on using SS/SI alot, then look for the largest screen you can get/afford/can't afford. The larger screens will show you the detail you want/need while the small 5" screens can't. I have a HDS 8 G1 and like it alot, and can see the detail pretty well. Have not seen or used anything larger so can't compare the detail on the screen. Members here are upgrading all the time, so you might find a good unit that fits your budget in the for sale forum. GL

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
