My Eagle developed a mind of its own and only worked about half the time when I started fishing this year so I decided to buy a new unit. After much research and a tremendous amount of confusion I finally decided on a Humminbird 597 ci HD DI. The down imaging is amazing and the huge variety of screen views and split screens are really useful. I am still a beginner and can't imagine what I will be able to see after a little more practice.
I wanted to post this opinion because of all the differing reviews I read while doing research. Every unit I considered had about as many bad user reviews as good ones. I finally decided there was a lot of user error in installing and using fish finders. In short, I am extremely happy with the 597 ci HD DI

Kodiak, did you consider SI when you made your decision? My Eagle is also "acting up" and trying to decide on SI or not. Getting too close to "trip time" and need to decide.
Propnut, I didn't really look too hard at SI. Wasn't even going to buy DI, but my wife talked me into it.
SI or DI will depend a lot on your fishing style and what you need your electronics to show you...
2d will show structure under the boat...
DI will show structure under the boat and out to sides a few feet...
SI will show structure under the boat, out to the sides 100+ feet, and which side of the boat....
DI is fantastic for picking apart structure under the boat looking for structure detail or embedded fish..
SI is fantastic for finding schooled fish in the outbound water column and finding new structure out to the sides that you never knew was there...
