I am really looking at upgrading electronics as the non color 4x that came standard on my boat to me is a POS and doesn't even seem to find detect any fish. (possible the transducer is damaged)

Anywho, my question is for anyone that has this unit. The person @ cabelas today said that this unit does not have side scan capability. Is side scan THAT important? The guys that I fish with rarely ever use a fish finder. They just troll around for a while and cast for a long time until they stumble upon something.

Any informative youtube videos or any other videos of the units in action?

Also, what's the difference with the HDS model? other than the 700 vs 1000 price tag.
Now I guess there's a DSI model also. Sheesh.... SO many models.

Your post sent me scrambling for my unread Cabela's sale flyer and, yes, it's the Elite 7x (without GPS) that is $549... The same price that Lowrance lists it on their site. It DOES have the DSI (down imaging) however.

I'm drooling over the Elite 7 HDI (Hybred Down Imaging) combo. (with GPS). It is the $700 unit. I'd have bought it in a second at $550... Might call one of the online stores like Three Rivers Marine electronics they're not allowed to advertise prices lower that mfg. advertised price but they will often give you a better price on the phone.
