Default Ram mount extension for GPS antenna

Anyone tried one of these ram plates to put the HB GPS antenna on right behind unit? I ordered one already for my bow unit so I wouldn't have to screw down an antenna to the front of boat, and it would remove the unit when not using. I haven't received it yet, but I'm hoping others have had success with it. Hopefully it's not too close to unit and gets plenty of clear sky to function...
Did I waste the $15 or will the antenna function ok mounted like that?

Why would you not want an external antenna mounted above your transducer for better accuracy?

It will be mounted above transducer. Transducer on tm, unit on front of boat. I just don't have a lot of room left up front between tm, rod holders and everything else up there. Thought this would also get it above most of the other stuff up front, and didnt want to screw it down to boat. Atleast not yet...

Looks to me as the head unit itself will be blocking 180° of the satellites...

It needs a "clear" view of the sky...

rnvinc is correct. GPS signal is not very strong and travels a long way...It needs a clear view for you to achieve best results. Puck needs to be above the head unit or mounted somewhere else. Spaceman

It didnt work for me, I made one of those plates and it didnt work, I had to extend the puck above the top of the unit, then it worked fine.

What Wilbur says is correct, I tried one when I had HB997 and biggie bunch of satellites were blocked had to remove it and mount GPS on plastic pipe to clear 997
