I put the 798 on the TM to start with and never was able to get much since most of the time I slow troll there. And was turning the TM a lot and got skewed displays all the time. Where am I going wrong.? Right now I have my 788 connected to the US2 on the TM but do wish I had thought about this Ethernet in the beginning. Now I can see me getting rid of both the 798 and 788 and maybe get two of the 788CI HD DI units, one for the dash and one for the TM. Ur thoughts?

So many options..so many decisions...sometimes makes it very difficult...
I would suggest consider your preferred fishing styles and try to match the sonar technology that best helps accomplish success with a certain unit at the separate stations in the boat...(2d or DI may or may not be your personal choice for the console in your fishing style, SI may or may not be your personal choice for the bow in your fishing style, etc...) those decisions you have to make...
2d advantage is sitting on top of structure..(and high speed depth readings)..
DI advantage is getting a better understanding of what the 2d can show...
SI advantage is finding structure out to the sides of the boat...
GPS advantage is marking structure to be able to come back to it later...
Even networking 2 units together has advantages and disadvantages (sharing info vs possible interference issues..etc)...
There's even still the option of HB Interlink to connect your existing 798 and 1198...and this entails advantages and disadvantages also...

Thanks, I was under the impression that if I connected them via Ethernet the in interference would be eliminated. ??
i had planned to locate bait, fish, structure, etc with the SI and DI at the console. Mark those and come back using the WP set along with the sonar up front, which is at this time US2. Fish those spots along with slow, slow trolling and possiblly mark some more spots from there that I would like to be on the FF at the console. Along with all this, I would like to have maps at the console while I have the 1198 on full screen, since I need to fill the hole in my dash with something useful.
The jest of it all is, I would like to Ethernet all of them and eliminate as much interference as possible. I don't think interlink would help me as I think I would still have the interference between the ff in the dash and the 1198.
Ur thoughts?
thx

Interference would depend a lot on how the units are set up with Ethernet...
If you Ethernet using 1 Xducer shared ....this would eliminate possible sonar to sonar crosstalk interference but could still have power wire related interference issues..(interference can come from several different sources)...

So here's a scenario that may be a possibility as you have already mentioned getting a new unit for the bow and an extra unit for the console...
You are slow searching sitting at the console...
*The 1198 is already there...
*The new extra unit could be a DI combo unit...
This would allow:
1. Full screen SI on the 1198 - Full screen chart on the DI combo
2. Full screen chart on the 1198 - Full screen "True" DI on the DI combo
3. Full screen chart on the 1198 - Full screen 2d on the DI combo (for high speed..might need a "Y" cable with a shoot thru hull 2d Xducer)
4. (Other scenario page views)
Ethernet both console units to a bow mounted SI combo or DI combo...
You now move to the bow unit to fish...
This would allow...
1. 2d - with sharing waypoint data from either console unit..
2. SI or DI - with sharing waypoint data from either console unit...
3. (Other page scenarios)..

I really thank you for all ur input, u have given me much to consider.
i have a war eagle predator, which is alum. When I installed the 1198 I had a power issue not getting enough amps where the old ff was connected so I wired it direct to the bat with an inline fuse.
looking at ur last, what I want is full SI or SI/DI on the 1198, full chart most of the time on the DI unit in the console. And I want the one on the bow to mostly have chart which I will use the US 2 ducer, and I want all 3 to share waypoints. Right now, I have the 788 on the bow and since i use the US 2, there is no interference, but it won't Ethernet. So, I'ma have to change it out too and purchase many wires and the gizmo to have more than 2 Ethernet units. I C this getting expensive.... But what I have is not working, so...
Right now, I have the 1198 at the console with 2 ducers on the back, left/right, works great on SI or any mode with the 798 powered off. When Im n DI mode, it only uses the right ducer and I figured if they were Ethernet the second unit would use the right one as well.
Clear as mud?

One thing to remember in the scenario that you are contemplating...
The 1198 is a SI technology unit...
If you Ethernet the 1198 to a DI technology unit (DI in the model name)...they will not be able to share any sonar data...they will only share GPS data (waypoints, routes, tracks)..
So if you decide on a DI technology unit next to the 1198... Each unit's respective Xducer would have to be used...(they cannot share an Xducer)...
So consider the scenario of your idea for both console units, ethernetted together, sharing 1 Xducer.....both would have to be SI units to share GPS data "and" sonar data...
But as you have indicated 1 of the console units would be on full chart most of the time ...which would most likely have very little chance for any interference issues...(this unit would have to have the sonar turned off in the menu to keep the 200kHz beam from operating)...

So, am I correct in my thinking that I could connect up to 5 units via Ethernet and the gizmo, and as long as they all were SI units and they would share the same ducer, gps, ect. And I could set a waypoint on one and it would be shared with all.
I don't want to turn off the sonar on any of them if I can avoid that.
So then what would be wrong with having my 1198 at the console, a 598ci hd SI in the dash,(it appears to be the same physical size as the 798 and would fit the hole already there and has a 5" display) and also another one at the bow, but connected to the US2 on the TM, and a 998c SI on the back for use when pulling crank baits. it helps to have a larger screen there for me. All 4 would be in the network and All of them could share the same ducer except the one on the bow. And they all would share waypoints, etc..
If this is a feasible idea, then that's where I'm headed, if not, back to the drawing board...
ur thoughts?
thx

O, well, just read where the 598 doesn't have Ethernet, so replace the two 598s above with 798s..

Here is the gizmo you mention...It allows up to 5 ethernet items...
AS ETH 5PS :: Humminbird
Also you would need this cable to connect the 700 series unit to the ethernet...
AS EC QDE
Remember that only a 700 series unit that has "HD" in the model name is compatible with Ethernet..
Now, let's look at your possible setup...
*798ci HD SI Combo -in the dash
*1198c SI Combo -on the console gimbal mount
*998c SI Combo -on the back
*798ci HD SI Combo -on the TM
This setup can be connected with Ethernet and share all sonar data and GPS data...
This setup can share 1 xducer and 1 GPS antenna for the first 3...
This setup can allow the bow mount 798ci HD SI combo to use the US2 on the TM...(if I read the forums correctly)..
Now, let's look at the problems with this setup...
The US2 crystals in the TM cannot read any SI/DI data..it is 83/200kHz Dualbeam 2d only...
The 798ci HD SI Combo cannot be connected to the US2 and the stock 798 SI xducer at the same time....
The 798ci HD SI Combo "Transducer Select" menu has to be set manually to "Universal Sonar 2" setting to use the US2...
The extra cost of the 798ci HD SI Combo using US2 2d is un-necessary when the SI is disabled...
I feel it would better serve your purpose to use a 788ci HD Combo on US2...(still Ethernet to the 4 unit setup to share GPS data with your network)....
Now (and this is important)...before your drop your dime on anything....
Give Greg time to have a chance to read this thread to make 100% sure that I haven't given some info that is incorrect...
(I don't work for HB...I just try to help guys interested in HB understand their possibilities... with info I have learned..:) )

I can't tell u how much I appreciate ur help. It has helped me understand what I have and what I need and helped me understand these systems more. I have been shopping around for prices and also thinking about what I may be able to get for the two units I wont need in this setup. Good idea about the 788, that will save some $ too.
I will wait on you and/or Greg to say the word.
again, thx
