Default Will Lowrance Elite 5 DSI mark fish & structure at slow speed or sitting still??

Bought E5DSI unit yesterday and have not installed yet. Concerned about many of the reviews I have been reading. One in particular discusses the unit at low to no speed. See below review from BPS site:

"Most people that have problems with this unit dont understand how this product works. You have to be moving at least 12 knots or 8 mph for optimum efficiency. At that speed this product is great, so no you cant sit over top of a rock pile and count the fish down there you must be moving for it to work."

I fish mostly shallow water, 10-15'. Sometimes as deep as 20-25. Always for crappie. Also use trolling motor when I get to my brush and/or drop-off's, or while searching new areas for brush. Concerned unit may not read properly??

Beginning to feel I just need a 2d unit with GPS feature. DI is questionable at this point because of the above as well as fear of the very small swath I will recieve in the shallow water I fish.

    Thoughts/comments appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Dan.

You will mark fish with your elite 5 dsi. You will see small white specks/white lines. if your sitting still or moving a slower speeds... You can get arches on your DSI you, but the fish has to be in the apex of the cone and you or the fishing has to be moving.

Here's a picture mine and these are bass, fyi this was mounted a the bow, next to my HDS unit at the time. On the DSI unit I didnt have gps turn on, because I had my HDS gps on.

Jason, thanks for this info. I had the same question a couple of days ago. Fri, I could not see any fish sitting still, so they probably weren't any there--cause, we didn't catch any. But I love the structure display!

Woodworker42, start looking at some images from the down scan off the LSS-1 or LSS-2.. You will get the idea on what fish, will look like on your DSI unit.

Jason ... Woodworker has a Elite 5DSI unit, same as I do, and I don't think he has a LSS.

Come join in the discussions on this unit ... in either or both of these threads :

If you haven't already read them, there's some good discussions going on in the two threads I posted (see my reply to Jason, in this thread, for links).

I've read +/- reviews on this unit, too. And IMHO, the negative reviews were mostly from people that expected the unit to work like a 2d/HDSI/SI/underwater camera combination.

Come join in the discussions, and together maybe we can figure out how to best utilize the capabilities of this unit.

I know he doesn't have a LSS, but he can look at some screen shots from other anglers from their LSS and get a idea what to look for. There's more screen shots of Down Scan from the LSS, then from a DSI unit. Its just reference for him to get a mental idea on what to look for on his graph.

That's what I thought you meant ... but just wanted clarification so that other readers wouldn't get the wrong impression. Thanks !!
