Default will trolling motor overheat if running without water?

I have an old minn kota 30lb trolling motor that I want to modify to put on my kayak. The motor is old and torn and basically the only usable part is the motor it self. My plan is to install the motor inside the hull of my kayak and have the shaft of the motor extented to go through which only the propeller will be outside the Kayak. My question is that since the actual motor will be inside the hull of the kayak not in the water. Will it get overheat?

BTW I will be using the paddle to steer. The motor' job is just to prepell me forward.

Yes it will. The motor is designed to be submerged for cooling.

The enemy of a dc motor is heat. Submergable dc motors are usually sealed and have no cooling fins. However, it would work for a while. If the motor was run on like a 20/80 intermittent pattern, it would last a long time. Now if you have a medal boat, you could use the boat skin as a heat sink and possibly double the intermittent operation.

I agree with Tom but then I got to wondering how they handle the heat in those electric outboards. Impeller maybe?

I believe the motors are still submerged. PWM probably in the head unit atop. My V2 PWM is only heat sinked. No cooling fans. I have used 12v brushless fans on a heat sink for cooling PWM circuits in robots. I ain't sure how it is done Bill.
