Maybe Rickie.
It all gets back to when the GR50 was manufactured and just how much current that particular 797c2 unit can source for the accessories. The current GR50 uses a bit less power while operating versus the first ones we made (the original GR50’s were not designed to be used with the 797c2 units). Some 797c2 units may be able to provide enough current to operate a GR50 but some cannot. If the unit cannot than the unit will burn out the accessory power circuitry and it will have to be repaired (~$200) or replaced.
The cost to repair a GR16 is listed as $60.45 on the Humminbird web site:
Humminbird: America
A repaired GR16 should have a 90 day warranty on it.
New AS-GR16’s are listed for not much more than that on the Humminbird site:
AS GR16 :: Humminbird
A new GR16 should have a 1-year warranty on it.

Thanks Greg.. I'll make a note of that so I can advise people to only test/operate the 797 with the AS GR16....
Bttmline... Have you been able to get a puck connection by taking the cables out of the mounting bracket and plugging directly into unit...??
Rickie

yes I have and still nothing. I suppose I will buy a new puck.
Now, Greg, My unit came with a gr50 so do I have to replace it or can I purchase the 16?

bttmline,
Did you buy the 797 unit new and it came with a GR50 GPS Receiver? I did not think that we started making the GR50’s until after the 797’s were replaced by the 798 units. I would not take the chance and would recommend getting the GR16 GPS Receiver, just to be on the safe side.

Yes it came with a 50. But I will gladly by a 16. Thank you for all your help!!
