    Default Losing gps

Anybody have a problem with losing your gps signal when you start your motor with the locator on? Thinking it has something to do with the battery being older. Any ideas?

I had an issue where my back light would dim and stay dimmed when I started the OB. I had a 3 year old group 24 battery for the OB so I switched it to a new group 29 a couple of weeks ago. I've only been out a few times and with this heat I've only fished a few half days. So far it been good and I haven't had any problems since the change. I guess running the 2 HDS units plus the LSS-1 and livewell all day must have been too much. At least I hope that what caused the problem.

    Good luck with the fix.

I have a HDS 8 hooked up to a cranking batt made in 5/06, and the HDS works fine. I haven't noticed it loosing gps lock when I cranked the big motor (60 hp). I have left the HDS on for 4hrs or more when starting the 60hp, but didn't get an alarm about losing gps lock. I also had the HB 788 HD going most of the time as well (wired straight to the cranking batt) so you may have a weak battery. Newer electronics are very picky about their power supply
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

My HDS8 and 997 both cut off when cranking. I was told by an expert to replace the cranking battery. I did. Didn't fix the problem. I went back and got a bigger crank battery. Didn't fix the problem. I just shut the dang things off now before starting, PIA.

Check your ground also. I fought with my 898 and 570 getting low voltage when cranking. I ended up running a heavier gauge wire for both the power and ground directly to the cranking battery. I cut all but about 24" of the Humminbird power cable off and soldered and heat shrinked this to my heavier wires coming from the battery. No issues since. Originally I had just ran a new power wire and grounded into the bus under the dash. Only when I ran the new ground wire as well did the issue go away. You could run a piece back to the battery temporarily to see if it helps before you go through the trouble of fishing the wires.

Forgot to add that I ran seperate wires for both units with inline fuses at the battery. I soldered and heat shrinked all the connectors and splices and then coated with liquid electrical tape... May be overkill but I hate fighting electrical problems on the water...

I plan on doing this during the winter when I'm bored out of my mind.

Load test your battery, if its good then check your wiring. Years ago I smoked a almost new Eagle 7200 because of a bad battery, I hit the key to start the outboard and the depth finder immediately went off and never came on again. I think todays units are more tolerant of lower voltage.

Personally I like to use a fuse panel to run my electronics off of, you just to have make sure the supply wires to the battery are large enough to carry the load. I currently have three HDS units and a LSS-1 on my boat and once I start fishing never turn them off until I'm through for the day. The battery on my boat is a group 31 Everstart and my units don't even flicker when I start the ob, a 90 hp Yamaha.

Bigger wire is always better--especially when you have 12v or 24v circuits. Today's electronics suck up more juice than the old stuff did.
