    Default Buy new or used?

Looking to get a new 898c si or a used 997c si. Can get a new 898 for $1299 or a used 997 for $1000-$900. Should I bite the bullet and buy new 898 (warranty) or is the bigger screen 997 worth the risk of buying used and not having a warranty?

    That's a tough one...

I would have to know the used unit itself or the owner's ability for proper care of the used unit...(is the owner a "Oscar" or a "Felix" from "The Odd Couple"...)

I just bought a used 997 from a local boat dealer. Got the unit and ram mount for a 1000.00. Called Humminbird before buying to make sure I could register for updates and to find about service if something went wrong, they have a flat rate repair for 260.00. Being able to see the unit was a big plus and the dealer guaranteed the unit to work. I figured worst case scenerio if it died a few months later and had to have repaired still saved about 500.00. Having the option to remove the readouts on the sidescan screen will make the 898 very comparable to the 997.

With all the new upgrades the 800 unit may be able to be fitted with a lot of cool stuff. the 900 unit has seen it's best days but it is still a great unit.

If you are considering used, go with the biggest screen you can get. If you change your mind within 1-3 months, you can probably resell for close to what you paid.
