Default Converting from 12 to 24

First off greetings from a newbie! I reside in Kansas and a stones throw away from John Remond and Wolf Creek/Coffey County Lake. I purchased a 1992 Tracker tx17 a month ago and really like it so far. It has a 28lb 12 volt trolling motor on it right now and is ok but no excess power. I bought a 41 lb off craigslist but its 24 volt and has a different plug. Questions is it easier to change plug ins on trolling motor or boat? Do I need to run different wires? How big of deal will it be to convert to 24? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys and gals! Clay

It's pretty easy to do and you can find information on how to do so online or write / email / call the manufacturer. The plugs are pretty easy. You can purchase the male / female pair at any boat store or online (even Amazon carries them). You can swap either side, it's up to you. The reason the plugs are different is to prevent an unknowing person from plugging a 12v item into a 24v circuit. Both plugs will handle the voltage. The amperage is more of the concern, but both should be close in amperage. The most critical part is setting up your battery bank properly. A simple how-to can be found here How to Wire a 24 Volt Trolling Motor | eHow.com but there are surely many more. Just search google for "How to wire a 24v trolling motor".

Barnacle Bill has some battery wiring info. Maybe he will add it to the battery sticky. This question comes up often.
