We got down to ky lake last week just in time for that cold front to hit and unfortunatley for us fishing was pretty tough. We did manage to squeeze out a few good-uns @ 16". We didn't have a very good scale so what's a 16" fish weight?
We did get a few pics of some of the nicer fish...
This year we were honored to have EFslabs join us on the trip. I was hoping to get him on some monster crappies that Ky Lake is known for but it just wasn't meant to be. We had a few pretty nice red ear show up and we may have been able to get more but we never actually stopped and fished for them with bait.
It was a different story for us than Pakrat. Live bait ruled the day most of the time with a nearly a non existent jig bite. In a normal year we'll get 60-70% on jigs. This year it was maybe 20-25%. I had been really putting a whooping on the crappie here before I left using Nightprowler's 1/16oz chinspins with the larger blades and was hoping to show the KY Lake a new look but they were just tight lipped. Those baits have a really good thump that these Ohio crappies find irresistable.
One of the highlights was showing EFslabs a whole new world of crappie fishing. It was a new world fish that big lake for him. We had some pretty good winds which we didn't let stop us from make the run down the lake to our spots. I think Tbone recommended Wally World Everstart batteries last year when I had to replace my old ones and they performed very well. On our last day it was 18mph wings gusting to the upper 20's and my foot never left the TM. Those batteries started and finished the day strong. On the northern end where we were there isn't a ton of cover so you have to look at other options. Wind blown shores were one of the better spots so were staying in them all day. We did catch plenty of fish during the trip with about 1/2 being short crappie and just bunches and bunches of (mostly) small bass. To say we had 50 bass days would be consevative some day.
My biggest concern is I hope Brian doesn't get discouraged and it keeps him from trying the big waters again some time.
Reguardless of the outcome I just really enjoy that lake.
Brian had a few other pics I hope he can get on here too.
Oh yeah, we started the trip in long jons and heavy jumpsuits w/gloves and drove home in shorts and sandles. What a switch.
