Targeting mid-winter crappies under the light of the February moon
Two general patterns for mid-winter crappies are persistent in my portion of the frozen north. The first is a good daytime bite for suspended fish over deep basins, particularly on sunny days in stained lakes. Under these circumstances, maximum sunlight penetration will energize the food web, and put those suspended deep water crappies on a very consistent bite. The second general pattern is a great way to target crappies on very clear bodies of water with good weed growth. Crappies will still suspend over deep basins during the day on such lakes, but unless sufficient cloud or snow cover is present, those fish will not exhibit consistent feeding activity during the day. However, once the sun drops below the treetops, those same basin fish will invade mid-depth weedbeds on their way to shallow feeding flats. Once these fish push into the mid-depth weeds, they become quite easy to catch. In this article, I'll teach you how to use electronic resources from Humminbird and LakeMaster to locate and catch slab crappies under the light of the mid-winter moon.
