    Default Humminbird 1158c Combo & 1198c Combo -- questions

    .

Need a little help here. I'm getting ready to
make a (big for me) upgrade to the sonar on
my boat. I've been using a FishMark 320 and
want to get a side imaging/down imaging sonar.
    I want the big screen.

What is the difference between these two units ?
From some descriptions on the internet they seem
to do the same thing, but one is $500 more than
the other. I'm sure I'm not reading everything
    right.

    thanks, Chris

Do a youtube search for Side Imaging and then on Down Imaging, that will probably explain it better than someone trying to type it out for you. But they are not the same, as the names suggest the side looks out to the side a lot further than the down imaging will or can. Good luck.

    Hi Little Skeeter

Yes, I've researched this some. This YouTube video is on the 1158c page on
the Humminbird website. From what they are saying here, the 1158c has
2D, down-imaging, and side-imaging and can display all three at the same
    time on the screen.

What can the 1198c do that this unit can't ?

    thanks kindly, Chris

    lcookie is right:

1158c Combo is 2D (conventional) sonar only.
1158c DI Combo is 2D sonar + (true) Down Imaging sonar.
1198c Si Combo is 2D sonar + Side Imaging sonar + Down Imaging sonar (derived from the Si sonar beams).

All have GPS since they are “Combo” units (combined sonar + GPS).

You have to watch those additional letters in the model name and make sure what you are buying as all retailers do not use the correct model names.

Chris, where, in that video, did it say the 1158c has side imaging?

Each unit has its own strengths.

Dual beam, Down Imaging, and Side Imaging will all help you put crappie (or any other fish, for that matter) in the boat.

Here are a few examples of how I use these technologies for crappie fishing:

Using Humminbird sonar to stay with roving late summer crappies

Finding summer crappie with Humminbird Side Imaging and VMC jigs

Fall fishing hotspots revealed by Humminbird Side Imaging

Mid-summer panfish revealed by Humminbird Down Imaging

Targeting spring panfish with Humminbird Side Imaging

Currently, I run an 1198c at the console (Dual beam, SI, DI) and am installing an 1158c DI (dual beam and DI) that can be moved between the bow and the transom for trolling applications.

I think I see what you mean. Even though the video says that you can show show down imaging
and side imaging on the screen together (30 seconds into the video) it does not mention the 1158c.
I made evidently the wrong assumption that if this video was on the page for the 1158c that it
would be describing it's attributes. Likely this is a generic down-imaging video that they threw up
    on the page.

I will most definitely will NOT get a $2000 chart that does not perform side-imaging.

Thanks for these links. Very interesting information. It's obvious I
will need to pony up the extra for the 1198c DI-SI chart/GPS combo.
No big deal. I'll just sell something else.

    best, Chris
