Default Humminbird thru hull transducer mounting question (HUMMINBIRD XNT 9 DI T)

I know this sounds like a dumb question. which way should the larger end be facing? front of boat or rear? the pics in the installation guide that came with it dont even show this model.

The end with the circular "gear" on top is mounted closest to the transom.

The larger end is the front of this transducer but it will not hurt to install it backwards either (narrower end towards front of boat) as this transducer does not have a left-right orientation like the Side Imaging transducers do.

Send me a direct e-mail if you want an installation guide that shows this transducer for an inside-the-hull mount. The file size restriction for this web site will not allow my to attach it to this message.

    Default transducer help

thanks for the reply guys. i have it installed the way jason said. the reason i was wondering was because i can be running 40-50 mph in 30' of water and i would get a reading of 300 or more feet. also when sitting still sometimes the depth will start flashing some crazy depths. i just dont have it dialed in i guess.

Sorry, thought you were installing this transducer inside-the-hull instead of on the transom.
Jason is correct: the geared end to the front.
You may have to lower the transducer farther into the water to get it to reed at speed.
Make sure that you are not running a second sonar unit at the same time as you could be getting sonar-to-sonar interference.

it is inside the hull. was just saying i have the gear end facing to the rear of the boat. updated the software on it and seemed to work much better.

Than it won’t hurt it to be mounted backwards.
Hope the software update fixed it all for you.

ive got that same transducer mounted on my trolling motor using 597hd/di .while in di mold i can turn trolling motor anyway possible and it doesnt seem a affect whats coming across the screen. what i mean by that is that it doesn't distort like si does when i turn the boat.seeems to me that it should distort, but it doesn't

    Kosmo,
That is probably due to the distance to the side that you are using with the Si versus the DI units. The farther the distance show the greater the distortion. I would also bet that the DI sonar can update faster as the unit has to only fire one or two elements versus at least three in the Si units. A faster transmit/receive cycle would allow for less distortion.
