788 hd or 798 hd on tm

i personally like the smaller units up front.could be any name brand, but i to have humminbird and i do like them. i like having my trolling motor unit installed in the dash up front.i dont like those great old big screens that look like tv's in my way. it wasnt just the cost that made the decision to go with the 998 instead of the 1198 .for me, i think that the 1198 just looks to big sitting there on the side of a bass boat the 998 looks just right . thats just my thoughts, i do see a lot of those( tv's ) around (if it were me buying a unit for the front of my boat today,i would go with the 788 just because of the two sd card slots)also if di is your thing than i believe that you will get better results from a 788hd/di that has the dedicated down looking crystal over the 798 si/di/hd that uses the si crystals for the di.also you already have si with the 998 maybe you would like to have si on the trolling motor to. you can use ethernet to share the two transducers

I would recommend the 798 simply for the fact that you will be able to share all sonar data between that unit and your 1198 over ethernet.

Any of the HB models (up thru 2011 models) that end in 97 or 98 are SI models ( x97, xx97, x98, xx98)

These models also have DI ....but the DI image is rendered from the SI crystals ...

I thought that i would add a little more input here to maybe help you and others trying to decide were and how much noney to spend.ill start by saying that i have both di from si and the di with the dedicared down looking crystal.i think that if the di is your main reason for buying a new unit then i would recomend the unit with the dedicated di crystal.that being said,i have experimented with these units.ive done everything but drove my boat under the water.i cannot see were di shows me anything more than conventual sonar.now you see it posted all the time were somebody claims di helped to catch more fish,but i think nothing more than pritty pictures.ive got whole bunch of them posted on this site.not one of those pictures helped catch a fish.si is the only tool since sonar that has helped me catch more fish

These guys are right in that the Down Imaging sonar from the Si units like the 798 is different from the Down Imaging sonar from the DI labeled units. The DI sonar from the DI labeled units will be clearer but will not cover as wide of an area. If you want prettier pictures than go with the 788ci HD DI unit. If you want to be able to search a wider area as well as share the sonar with your 998c Si unit on the console; than go with the 798ci HD Si unit and Ethernet connect them [both units can be Ethernet connected to the 998 but due to the different nature of the 788ci HD DI unit it cannot share sonar with the 998 unit.].
