    Question HB Ethernet-788ciHD to 898

    Ethernet--788ciHD to 898 7:13 AM 11/13/2011 Reply Edit

I powered up my units last night & followed the Ethernet Manual closely. I have 1 problem..
My 788ciHD is at the bow which made it easy to connect the external antenna & transducer(TM) to it along with the ethernet cable..I am using 1 transducer(HD-SI) at the TM for both units..The manual said power up the 788 first since this is where the transducer is connected...

All went well with the 788 when I went to the Network tab to set it up.I renamed it the BOW unit.I had only 1 choice for transducer and that was 83/200..I checked the block and also checked the ext ant block and share waypoints block..

The 898(TILLER UNIT) didn't do too well.It would only let me choose 83/200 for the transducer..In doing so it would only show 2D sonar views..No SI or DI..I was able to check the ext ant block and the share waypoints block..
Could that problem be the fact that the transducer was connected to the 788(2D) and not the 898? Just shooting in the dark..
GPS & External antenna & shared waypoints seems to be working fine. I sure do dread the thought of having to connect the transducer cable to the 898, which is at the tiller..It involves a lot of tear down..

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Don, (I 'm just guessing here because I don't use 2 units)

Here's RGecy info from sideimaging.com...Humminbird Ethernet Overview

I think your assumption may be correct....(about hooking the xducer to the 788)

    In your present wiring setup:
    1. SI/DI/2d sonar data coming from the HDSI xducer goes into the 788
    2. 788 cannot process the SI/DI info .....so that SI/DI info just stops...and will not pass thru the 788 processor..into the ethernet..to be carried to the 898

You may have 2 options here (in my mind):
    1. rewire the HDSI xducer to the 898 first (because the 898 can process SI/DI/2d sonar data)
    2. install this switch so that the sonar data from the HDSI xducer can be selected to go to either head unit ...and then each head unit's processor can read the sonar data that head unit is capable of reading...
    US3 :: Humminbird Unit Switch

I think it would be a good idea to either email Greg ([email protected]) or wait for him to get back on here and answer your question ...because remember....

I'm just guessing at your problem also...

Thanks for the reply, Rickie..This afternoon I removed the TD wire from the 788 and ran it to the 898 as a temporary test..
That cured the problem.Thumbs Up After re-programming the Ethernet cable from the Network tab the 898 now can see the 83/200,455,800 & the 788 can now see 83/200...Don't need the switch.I now need an EC W10 extension cable for the TD..

I think all will be well then.

    Thanks again

Sounds good Don... I'm glad you got it working...

I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the fact that the 788 could not process the SI/DI sonar info....

You got it figured out already here Don G, but just to clarify:

The 788ci HD unit does not have the 455/800kHz Si transmitter, receiver nor the programming for this type of sonar. So not only could the 788ci HD not be able to process or pass this sonar data through it – it could not make the Si/Di sonar to begin with. When connecting two or more units together to share sonar data the limiting factors will be: what sonar capabilities the unit that has the transducer connected to it has and what sonar capabilities the receiving unit has. In connecting the HDSi transducer to the 788ci HD unit; this combination was limited to the 2D sonar (200/83kHz) only of the 788ci HD unit. When the HDSi transducer was connected to the 898c Si unit; this combination has 2D and Si sonar capability and so can share it with other units that are connected to it via Ethernet. The 788ci HD unit has only the 2D sonar capabilities so that is the only sonar that it can show.

The GPS Receiver works the same regardless of which unit it is connected to as both units have the same GPS capabilities.

Hey Don, Did you ever get that boat on the water, or do you just like to look at it.

RoflRoflRoflJust about through..I need a transducer cable extension & ordered it today..Will put it in the water Friday..Going back to Kerr Wednesday & Thursday with the "old vets"..Will be fishing the bridge piers....Did well a couple of weeks ago..

Have you poured up some new baits since we were at Kerr?
