Yep, what BB said. Remember, that the must operate voltage of most units (including your unit) is 10 volts. If voltage drops below this level, even momentarily, your unit will reboot or in my case with (Humminbird 997) screen would freeze and I would have to disconnect power from the unit to get it to reboot. Never fixed the problem, even with a new start battery.
I now have a separate battery for all my electronics.
I hooked up my oscilloscope to the battery and saw impulse noises that varied in peak size from from 30 volts to near 0 volts and lasting 10-200 milliseconds. The worst negative swinging impulse voltage was when I started the big engine, and when bilge or circulator pumps turn on.
