Or would it be cheaper to buy a $100 fishfinder and a $79 handheld GPS?

What is the best sonar GPS combo out there for the money? I want to spend less than $500.
179 is less than 500.

CP is pretty much correct here...
If you are just wanting to save money and still be able to find structure and mark/return to waypoints..then your own suggestion of a cheap sonar and a separate handheld GPS will do the job....
When you start wanting more features (as we are all prone to do) that's where the added expenses start adding up....
Brands are user opinionated.....like ford vs chevy....
I would suggest to decide what features you have to have vs what features you can live without....
Then decide your price range.....
Then pick which unit will give you the 2 above mentioned criteria....

I have option 2 with no problems, I just want to be able to see fish under the boat, how deep the fish are, be able to mark structure as I find it in different parts of the lake.
GO BIG ORANGE !
I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
Take a look at the Humminbird 597ci HD Combo....it will do everything you need and more. The price is right in line with what you're wanting to spend.
Give me a call if you have any questions.

If you dont have to have color/side scan....Ive been impressed with my Humminbird 769 combo. BPS had them for $199 clearance when I got mine. Think they still have a few for $299.
