On board charger

I'm wanting to put an on board charger on my boat, but I'm very limited as to where I can put it. Is it okay to mount a waterproof one where it will be in the elements and not covered in a compartment?

The OB charger itself would waterproof, but the electrical connection to the 110v plug would not unless you keep your boat in the shed/garage. Do you not have any room at all in the engine/gas tank area. That is where mine is, but it was installed by the mfr, but it still pretty tight in there.

The answer to your question is yes, mount it anywhere. When charging batteries cover the drop cord connection and make sure water isnt going to run down the cord to the plug-in.

Just rig you up a cover thats easy to put on and take off for the plug and you will be fine.

I have an exposed charger on my Jon Boat.

I got a 3 wire to 2 wire connector plug. I cut the 2 wire end off and put silicone seal where I cut the plug pins. When I am not charging the batts, I plug the ac cord into the plug adapter. Keeps plug from getting damaged. I also put a small amount of dielectric grease on the ac cord connector pins to keep it from corroding.

Cheap fix and works well.

I forgot about that trick. I rigged one up years ago for my buddies boat and it did a fine job of protecting the plug. Easy to put on, easy to take off, and easy to loose.:D

No, no spare room in the engine/gas tank area. I've got a bare bone 18' semi V Tracker Jon tricked out with salt treated plywood decks and floors with I/O carpeting, stearing console, pedestal seats front & back,Terrova on the front, etc. No extra room with two batteries and tank in the back. I need to figure where to put another battery too, so I can run two 12v parralel. Glad to hear about the on board placement. Go Vols

My big problem with plug longevity is pulling out without unplugging my cord. Pulled a 50' cord 100 miles once.
