    Default Anchor winches

Hope I'm not posting in the wrong location. Has anyone ever used a portable 12v winch as an anchor winch? What would be the down side? Thanks,

Most portable 12V winches are geared low for pulling power. They'd take a minute or two to lower or raise an anchor, and they normally draw a pretty good amount of current.

Yeah I thought about the power draw, but hadn't considered the speed. I guess in certain situations that could be a big problem. I was looking at it because of the price difference. I can get the winch for a quarter of what a deck hand costs. May just have to come off the money!

I float corks & am therefore allergic to anchors...but...once in a while, there's no other choice. Loose line is ugly and dangerous, so I use a manual crank type. (example product) It wasn't too expensive & works fine--the then again, I rarely use/need it. If I were anchoring dozens of times a day, I'd move to a power winch--but that also means another battery to run it. I'm already up to 5 batteries (24v TM plus backup set of batteries & a starter battery for the gas motor) & don't want to carry 6.

Here's what it looks like installed on my boat.

For transportation safety, I wrap the anchor line around the cleat at the left edge of the picture. (In this shot, you also see the bow line looped through that cleat.)
